Most of you are aware that when your Pot is with you the magnetism of their personalities draw crowds of people. People smiling and laughing at the antics of your pet. What fun we all have bringing smiles to the faces of stranger's and friends alike, as we answer the many questions about exactly what it is like to be a pig parent. We love showing off our Pot's ability to do the tricks we have taught her. We talk about how smart they are and how loving and gentle they are. We also take about how stubborn and how curious they can be. People smile and laugh as we talk while our Pot does her usual antics. It is always fun to add a smile to a person's face.
We have all been asked to take our Pot to a church, or a classroom, or a nursing home, or a hospital, or a hospice, or a fair, or an exhibition, or...There are so many people and places interested in our Pots. I think that might be due to their ability to bring the smiles and laughter we have been talking about. As you reach out to help those in your community why not take your Pot along too? She can add a new dimension to your life and to the lives of those with whom she comes in contact.
If this is not your cup of tea, then here are other ways for you to support the members of your potbellied pet community. All of us are different, with different interest and different needs. Why not join your local potbellied pig club. The clubs across the country offer many types of fun activities for you, your family, and your pet pig. Also, many of them are involved in very worthwhile projects, such as finding homes for unwanted and abandoned Pots. If there is not a club in your area you might think about starting one yourself. It really isn't that hard. Just find a few pet pig parents like yourself and have them over for coffee. Put up some announcements at Vet Offices and stores that sell potbellied pig food and supplies. Maybe even take an ad out in your local newspaper or have your local radio station make an announcement for you. You'll be surprised how your group can grow in very short order. Besides, what fun you'll have meeting new pet pig parents, sharing stories and information, and thinking of ways to share your Pots with your community.
If you just don't have the time to do this, then there are still other ways to help. For example, you can help on the National level. NAPPA always has something for you to do. Come join us and volunteer your time to one of our special projects. We work hard to support the local clubs, the breeders, the shelters, the Vets, and the general population. We provide information for thousands of people each year. We receive tax deductible donations for our Education, Shelter, and Memorial Funds. We receive requests for small grants from local potbellied pig shelters. We publish an excellent monthly Newsletter. We write and produce informational brochures, handbooks, and videos. Even with all this, we have many projects waiting in the wings... a Breeder's Handbook, a Veterinarians Guide, brochures about pig behavior and care, a National Educational Convention and a Potbellied Pig Behavior, Care and Training Program with licensed trainers. The only thing standing between accomplishing these projects and fulfillment is you. You can help. You can make the difference between success and failure. Even if you don't have the time to take your Pot into the community so she can bring those smiles and laughter we talked about earlier, you can help others do it for you. You can contribute to your local club, to your local shelter, and to your national organization, NAPPA. We promise to use your money wisely. We promise to put it where it is needed most and where it will make the most impact in our national community.
